It’s Nollywood’s big year at the Toronto Film festival. Stars and industry veterans, Shola Shobowale, Kemi AAdetiba, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), Ireti Doyle, Adesua Etomi, Somkele Idhalama, Zainab Balogun, Beverly Naya and more made appearances at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The premiers are c-r-a-z-y! Eight (8) in total of Nigerian movies were lined up for this year’s festival including Omoni Oboli’s Okafor’s Law; The wedding Party co-produced by Ebony Life TV CEO, Mo Abudu and directed by Kemi Adetiba; and 93 Days by Steve Rukas & Bolanle Austin Peters amongst others.
One of the brightest stars of all, Genevieve Nnaji also made an appearance and spoke on the growth and dynamics of the Nigerian film industry along with Veteran Director Kunle Afolayan. According to TIFF, “As we mark this year’s City to City: Lagos programme, we welcome director Kunle Afolayan and superstar actor-singer Genevieve Nnaji for a conversation about Nigeria’s vibrant film industry and the international rise of Nollywood. In this inspiring onstage conversation, Afolayan and Nnaji will illuminate the complex dynamics behind the rise of Nollywood.”
Like I said earlier, it’s really been Nollywood’s year at #TIFF16. Other special happenings included an appearance by British-Nigerian Actor, David Oyelowo at the premier of The Wedding Party and ‘The Welcome Event’ by The Nigeria High Commission Toronto in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria for Nollywood filmmakers and actors.
